The Hits of Asia
Original and New Interpretations

I recall enjoying Asia in the early 80’s, but sort of forgot about them for about 25 years. I re-discovered them a few years ago and realized I still REALLY like some of their tunes!
Until tonight, I had no idea that some of them had been reinterpreted into acoustic cuts. I’ve hand-picked my favorites, including some live performances and re-imaginings.
I prefer the original, more bombastic style of “Heat of the Moment.” Big harmonies, big drumming, and big chorus!
I’m going to repeat myself, but there is just SOMETHING about John Wetton’s vocal. It’s irresistible.
This live performance of “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” is an interesting hybrid: it starts off acoustic and intimate, shifting at the 2:30 mark for the full-on electric treatment! It’s the best of both worlds!
I really like John Wetton’s tone. He’s obviously older here, but he can still hit the big notes. And the mandolin is REALLY good!
I’m a bit overwhelmed (and surprised) by how strongly I am reacting to it! It’s charming, captivating, delicate, and authentic. In fact, I find myself trying to heed Mr. Wetton’s advice and not cry just a bit at this song’s loveliness.
I would not have guessed this stripped down version of “Don’t Cry” would be SO successful. An exquisite find!
These three musicians honor the original feel of “Only Time Will Tell” and pack in a lot of drama for a stripped down interpretation. Geoff Downes’ piano-playing is stellar and adding Hugh McDowell on cello is inspired!
John Wetton combines strength and vulnerability. Swoon!
