I’m not nearly as acquainted with classical music as I should be. But I have my favorites and it’s a joy to share this beloved waltz, the appropriately named “Emperor Waltz” by Johann Strauss II. Although he has more famous compositions, this one has long been my go-to waltz.

In fact, the melody from 5:14–5:45 and 9:13–9:40 is one of my favorites of ANY piece of music.

I just read a bit about its origins and it makes sense: it was not intended as a romantic waltz. It was, in fact, honoring a visit between Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and German Kaiser Wilhelm II.

At various points the waltz alternates between being regal and majestic; lighthearted; prancing; charming; extraordinarily beautiful; and spirited. The strings are the MVPs throughout.

Don’t miss the masterful ending, however! It’s an astounding conclusion to a gorgeous piece of classical music!

The stars here are the trumpets and drums. The trumpets seem to be announcing the importance of the meeting between the two leaders. Then the rolling drums command our attention as the piece comes to its powerful conclusion.

I dedicate this charming waltz to my cousin, Cathy, in honor of her birthday yesterday.
