Thank you for the thoughtful response, Tom Kuegler!
I know we haven’t really interacted, but you were someone I thought of after the fallout between some of us earlier this spring. I recalled some of your writing — stories that acknowledged how you had made some missteps. Your ability to OWN your mistakes jumped out at me, particularly after these events that were totally unrelated to you.
Again, I don’t want to delve back into all of that. But somehow thinking about your ownership and sense of accountability mattered even more to me. I really didn’t want this story to be negative as much as honest.
Adding in how you have handled yourself on Medium made sense to me to round the story out and to give a positive example of how it’s possible to be imperfect but remain a Medium hero.
And, finally, excellent points about trade-offs and the concept of “sacrifice.” As a writer gains popularity, he or she will definitely have the internal battle of how to prioritize integrity and views. Some writers fare better with that struggle than others.
Many thanks for reading!
