Stay Up All Night With Me

A BMT Mixtape

Janet Jackson (aka Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty)

For better or worse, I share a lot of myself here. But believe it or not, I don’t always overshare. Today’s going to be one of those times.

I will merely say that there is a story behind today’s mixtape. And it makes me smile.

Though I can’t say more, I’ve woven a tale. I hope you’ll come along for the journey through these songs, my friends! Because there’s always music!

I’m going to slow things down soon enough, but I wanted to start off with something thematically spot-on. Musically (though not lyrically) there’s an undercurrent of drama, of the thrill of the unknown that comes in the wee small hours.

John Newman somehow manages to sound desperate and cocky. Recently I knocked out a mixtape that featured songs about guys going after the women they wanted and how attractive that confidence was to me. That’s the energy of “Losing Sleep.”

The pounding drums (okay, probably drum machines) with the plucky strings make for a delicious, upbeat mood that belies his restlessness.

I’ve been a fan of blue-eyed soul since I was a teen and it doesn’t appear that I’m going to outgrow it!

How charming is “Stars?” Am I the only one who always forgets about this 90s Simply Red tune?

A reference to the nighttime, some 90s pop, and an enthusiastic audience feels like the perfect link in this mixtape chain. Even my rather stoic heart falls for this unabashedly romantic song.
