I’ll Take an Order of Alt Music with a Side of Twang

The Fab 4, Southern gothic edition — REM

For some reason, Jupiter Coyote’s “Crazy Women” popped into my head earlier today. The last time I thought of that song was probably 1994. I can’t begin to explain the inner workings of my musical brain, but I knew I had to pull it up.

As I started listening to it, I knew almost immediately which direction my next mixtape was pulling me. All of these songs are sort of alternative (though not necessarily from the 80s) and flirt with varying amounts of twang.

When the term alternative 80s is tossed out, I suspect that most think of bands like Depeche Mode, the Cure, and New Order. Obviously bands like Wall of Voodoo, Talking Heads, and Melting English found success, too.

The truth is that alternative music always had range beyond spiky synths and outside the box musical geniuses (and/or characters a la Pete Burns, Adam Ant, and Boy George).

Favorite bands, forgotten treasures, and obscure picks are highlighted today!
