We Gen-Xers have to come to terms with the fact that we’re, well, old. Or at least old-ish. That means our beloved songs, our iconic bands are, ahem, old, too.

So I find myself including my second song from the 80s as part of my iconic song series.

I think I’ve already confessed that I’m not a huge Tears for Fears fan. In fact, if I had to pick, I’d choose Simple Minds (who feels the most apples-to-apples mid-80s vaguely alternative band that simultaneously had mainstream success) over Tears for Fears.

My followers know that I’d pick OMD, PSB, New Order, Depeche Mode, and most of the Madchester bands over either Tears for Fears or Simple Minds. I digress but felt the need to clarify.

Anyhoo, I do have a point.

Out of obligation or curiosity more than anything else, I had the chance to see Tears for Fears a few years ago at the fabulous Moody Theater in Austin. I was surprised when I found myself overwhelmed when the familiar “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” started up against the backdrop of a hazy smoky stage.
