I think that's a complicated answer, Joan, which is why I worded that paragraph the way I did. In the end, I realized I could not date him because I would have felt the weight of all financial responsibility on any dates I had with him. Which is unfair to both of us. But I had been open to a friendship until it was clear that wasn't what he wanted. Many thanks for reading/responding!
