I definitely have heard stories from guys about their own disappointing dating trials and tribulations. I'm so sorry this is hard for everyone!!!

My hairstylist always says: "They weed themselves out, Bonnie." It doesn't always feel that way but I try to subscribe to her theory. (It reminds me of your "rejection is protection.")
