Honestly, that had occurred to me, too, but the reality of these 2 things led me to conclude he knew what he was doing. (1) Unless he was BRAND NEW to online dating, there is no way he could not know what he was leading with and (2) The way he handled himself from then on.

Had he apologized immediately and reassured me he had no ill-intent, I would have backed off immediately. (And probably apologized myself for misinterpreting.)

Every step of his interaction with me was the opposite of what his profile indicated he was about.

When someone has been new to online dating and put his foot in his mouth, he has usually owned it or been confused. The fact that this guy handled it the way he did indicates to me that he knew what he was doing.

I giggled at your last paragraph: it REALLY is so confusing and ridiculous out there! (In Austin his first sentence/question might work with frequency. He just picked the wrong chick.)
