Elton John: Live Performances by the Legend

A BMT Mixtape

I have an overriding philosophy regarding music:

When the legend comes, you go!

I have seen Elton John exactly once. By sheer happenstance it was in Houston at Rice Stadium during my grad school days in the mid-90's. It was a Billy Joel/Elton John double-bill.

I was sober (really), but I have exactly one memory: that it had been raining leading up to the outdoor concert.

Billy Joel took to the stage first and started plinking out “Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head” on the piano. It was obviously a spontaneous decision and I found it charming.

I have zero memories of the rest of the concert.

Tomorrow I return to Houston to see Elton John perform for his farewell tour. I’m inclined to believe him: sure, he might perform for the occasional special gig, but I don’t think he’ll tour again.

So this is it!

I’m bummed that I bought 2 tickets and couldn’t find anyone to join me. But I’m still going!

As soon as I heard EJ’s keyboard playing, I was elated!

I couldn’t help but think: wow! I wish I could hang out in his family room or studio or wherever he plays around on his piano. He’s such a gifted pianist!

I love the relaxed but vibrant energy of this performance of chart-topper “Sad Songs (Say So Much).” And doesn’t Elton John look so fun and chic in his black ensemble!

I’m a big ol’ fan of build-up and drama (not in my life, but definitely in my music)!

It’s hard not to cry while listening to “Circle of Life.” It’s so…grand, epic, and moving!
