Although I feature alt 80s music regularly here at BMT, I typically extract unusual finds within the genre.

I wanted to do the exact opposite today. Think of today’s selections as the musical equivalent of chicken soup, the classic go-to when you seek comfort.

Instead of exotic and unusual tunes, I’ve handpicked familiar songs from eight of the most recognizable bands from the alt 80s scene.

I started with the four pillars of the alt 80s scene (the Cure, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, and New Order) and added in four additional bands that are quintessential to the genre.

I’ve tossed in a few live cuts and a remix, but I intentionally picked classic songs from the era rather than reaching for more obscure tunes.

It’s a treat to step back and revel in these familiar songs, the soundtrack of our 80s lives. I hope they bring comfort to you in 2020!

It was instant love when I heard Depeche Mode’s moody Black Celebration, but I wasn’t immediately…
