A BMT Mixtape

THE alt 80s masterpiece

Perhaps surprisingly, I rarely do mixtapes as volumes or series. They tend to be one-off endeavors. A few summers ago, though, I made a series of 7 or 8 really fun and silly summer mixtapes. Apparently, there’s something about this time of year that lends itself to turning my mixtapes into multi-volumes.

As a music genre, the alt 80s has many off-shoots.

For that reason, I realized that attempting to take on such an ambitious concept simply could not be achieved in a single mixtape. So I will be turning my “alt 80s masterpieces” into a multi-volume concept over the next few months.

These are the very best songs from roughly 1978–1992 that are going to be appreciated 50, even 100 years from now. I’m looking at this through a more objective lens than I typically do.

These songs are the alt 80s equivalent of Monet, Dior, Beethoven, Da Vinci, Austen, Admiral Nelson, Julia Childs, the Beatles.

You might not love the genre as much as I do, but within the alt 80s scene, THESE are the indisputable anthems. The creme de la creme. Yes, the masterpieces.
