30 Years of The Stone Roses
BMT Celebrates the Masters of Madchester
The Stone Roses debut album was released 30 years ago and remains one of the most important albums of the era.
I was 17 and enjoyed the entire album. I devoured it as well any B-sides I could get my hands (and ears) on.
Back then I didn’t realize how important these songs were. I just knew I wanted to keep hitting repeat!
I’ve written this before and I’ll keep proclaiming it:
The importance of the Stone Roses in music history cannot be overstated.
They are the link from the late 70s/early to mid 80s alternative bands to the explosion of Britpop of the mid-90s.
The Smiths, New Order, Depeche Mode, and the Cure (among others like the Clash, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Psychedelic Furs) allowed for bands like the Stone Roses, the Wild Swans, and Ride to emerge, which in turn allowed for Blur, Oasis, and Pulp to thrive.
The Madchester scene might not be as well known on this side of the pond, but that doesn’t make it any less significant. It is an integral stepping stone for alternative music!
The Stone Roses are the poster lads of the entire Madchester scene. They are the heart of that movement!
